Sculpture & Works of Art
The range of sculptures and statues includes objects from the late Gothic to the modern era. South German woodcarving at the beginning of the 16th century was represented by a relief of the birth of Christ by Jörg Gärtner (sold for 55,000 euros) and a large crescent moon Madonna by a Swabian master (sold for 32,000 euros). Highlights among the Baroque bronzes were a Saint Sebastian by the Italian sculptor Pietro Tacca (sold for 125,000 euros) and three small 17th century bronzes depicting the Fountain of the Four Rivers in Rome by Gian Lorenzo Bernini (sold for 167,000 euros).
The classicist relief “Charitas” by Canova and Thorvaldsen’s student Konrad Eberhard was highly sought after and was purchased directly by Queen Caroline of Bavaria (1776 – 1841) in 1813 (proceeds 67,000 euros).
One of the first and most important female sculptors of the modern era was Camille Claudel, who was not only the muse and most important collaborator of Auguste Rodin; her bronze "L'implorante" ("The Suppliant"), cast during her lifetime, returned to Paris for 72,000 euros.
In German classical modern sculpture, figures by Gerhard Marcks and Renée Sintenis, among others, set the tone. A new international auction record was achieved for Daphne by Sintenis (proceeds: 52,000 euros).
